I knew Steve's Lava Chicken song from A Minecraft Movie had gone viral, and that Jack Black’s hit was especially popular with younger children. But I still couldn’t believe my eyes last July at one of my daughter’s school assemblies, when one of the performers started singing it as a joke and nearly 500 children joined in! The teachers and I were completely astonished. That song was clearly a thing at school, so I thought, why not play it on the violin?

Is this just a local school trend? A London thing? Or has it taken off in your community too?

As usual, we’ve arranged it for a multi-level violin ensemble, so that everyone from complete beginners to advanced players can join in. If you have a beginner group, or want to use it in individual lessons, you can use the backing track  (Steve's Lava Chicken.wav) to play along with part 5 (open strings).

  • Violin 1': Main melody, one octave higher
  • Violin 1: Main melody
  • Violin 2: Harmony/accompaniment
  • Violin 3: Super easy, first position on G and D strings
  • Violin 4: Only 3 finger notes on the D string (la-ti-do')
  • Violin 5: Open strings (E and A)

Free download and previews below. We hope your students have fun with this -it will make them smile for sure!
